# Case Study: Containing an Automated AWS Credential Attack

![aGrid of 24 attempted actions across 12 AWS regions and two compromised credentials, every one denied](https://www.bitlyft.com/hubfs/case-study-aws-featured-v2.png)

Threat intelligence reports are full of hypothetical attacks. This one isn't hypothetical. It's a walkthrough of an incident our SOC handled for a client, with the identifying details removed — and it isn't a story about a breach. It's a story about whether the layers of defense that are supposed to work together actually do.

## At a glance

| **Under 1 minute** | From GuardDuty finding to an active incident with a named owner |
| --- | --- |
| **Under 10 minutes** | From detection to a live incident bridge with the customer's IT team |
| **24 findings** | Correlated back to a single event across 12 AWS regions |
| **Zero** | Data touched, permissions changed, or persistence left behind |

## Background

An organization running production workloads in Amazon Web Services engaged BitLyft's SOC for continuous monitoring across its cloud estate. Detection coverage included AWS GuardDuty findings feeding directly into the SOC's SIEM, with correlation and escalation handled by our analyst team.

## The Challenge

Two AWS access keys, belonging to two separate accounts within the same organization, ended up in the hands of an unauthorized party. Our SOC team was alerted the moment activity started, via GuardDuty findings flagging both credentials as compromised.

Once the credentials were in the wrong hands, automation took over:

- Requests rotated across **sixteen source addresses in eight countries** — deliberate anti-attribution tradecraft.
- The software identified itself with a **signature no legitimate AWS SDK uses**, a strong indicator of purpose-built credential-testing tooling rather than a human operator.
- The probe tested two things: *can I spin up servers?* (a classic setup for cryptocurrency mining) and *can I send bulk email?* (a classic setup for spam or phishing campaigns).

The activity spanned **twelve AWS regions across both credentials**.

## Our Approach

Detection is only useful if it turns into a conversation quickly. In this case, it did.

| Elapsed | What happened |
| --- | --- |
| Same minute | GuardDuty finding lands in the SIEM and is converted into an active incident — no queue, no gap between the platform seeing something and a ticket existing with a human's name on it. |
| Within minutes | SOC team loops in the wider analyst channel with the full picture as understood at that point. |
| Under 10 minutes | The customer's IT team joins a live incident bridge — both sides working the case in real time rather than trading emails. |
| Same hour | Stakeholders from both organizations, plus AWS's own incident response and account teams, are on the call. |

## Key Findings

**Every single request, across both credentials and all twelve regions, was refused.**

It failed because the permissions attached to those credentials didn't allow it. This is the least glamorous part of the story and the most important one:

> Least-privilege access controls did the actual work here. The attacker never got to ask what else the credentials could reach — because the two things it did ask were both denied outright.

Preventive controls rarely make headlines, because when they work, nothing happens. Nothing happened here. No data was touched, no permissions were changed, and nothing was left behind.

## Solutions

Our detection platform picked up the activity and correlated it into **24 critical attack-sequence findings** — one for every AWS region touched, across both credentials.

That correlation is what let the response move fast once it started. Four credentials were identified and disabled during incident response, including two that had never been individually flagged but shared an ownership link with ones that had.

## Challenges and Outcomes

Extending containment to those two unflagged credentials mattered. They hadn't triggered an alert on their own, but the team recognized they were exposed through the same route and pulled them offline anyway — the kind of judgment call that closes a gap before it becomes a second incident.

Nothing was compromised beyond the initial credential exposure. The tooling did its job, but so did the process around it: a correlated detection that sits in a queue for hours is worth a lot less than one that reaches the right people in minutes, on both sides of the relationship.

## Conclusion

Three things made the difference.

- **Least-privilege IAM is not optional boilerplate.** It was the single control that turned a credential compromise into a non-event.
- **Long-lived static credentials are a liability wherever they sit.** Short-lived, federated credentials remove an entire category of "how did this leak" investigations.
- **Correlated detection is what makes fast containment possible.** Tying 24 findings back to one event — and recognizing which unflagged credentials were exposed through the same route — is what let the team disable everything together instead of running separate investigations.

The interesting part of incident response was never just "did the bad thing happen." It's whether the layers holding it back — permissions, detection, people — actually work together. Here, they did.
