AI SOC vs. AI MDR: What's the Difference?
Two terms show up in almost every security pitch this year: AI SOC and AI MDR. Both use AI to investigate alerts. The difference is who runs the work and who is accountable when something goes wrong.
What is an AI SOC?
An AI SOC is software. It uses AI agents to triage alerts and gather evidence for each investigation. Your team buys the platform, connects your tools, and makes the decisions.
An AI SOC works well when you already have security analysts. It helps them close more alerts in less time. It does not give you more people. If nobody watches the queue at 2 a.m., the platform waits for someone to log in.
What is AI MDR?
AI MDR is a service. A provider monitors your environment 24/7. AI investigates each alert, and human analysts step in on the high-risk decisions.
You buy an outcome instead of a tool. The provider owns the detection work and is accountable for it.
Which one fits your team
Choose an AI SOC if you have a staffed security team that needs to move faster. Choose AI MDR if you have a small IT team that cannot watch alerts around the clock.
Ask any vendor: “Who does the work at 2 a.m.?” If the answer is “your team,” you are buying an AI SOC. If the answer is “our analysts, with AI doing the routine investigation,” you are buying AI MDR.
Many SMB and mid-market teams fall in the middle. They want to keep some decisions and hand off others. Look for a provider that lets you set that line.
Where BitLyft fits
BitLyft AIR® is Agentic MDR. AIR investigates alerts and closes cases with a decision trail your team can review. You choose how much of the response work your team keeps and how much BitLyft takes on.
